Pumpkin Smashing

November 8 & 9, 2014 at the Zion Nature Center
The first two weekends in November, have a smashing good time and help reduce land fill waste. Bring your old pumpkins to smash and add to our compost pile.

Bat Encounters

November 13, 2014 6:30 pm – Town Hall – Community Room 1100 W. Oak Street
Zionsville welcomes back the Organization for Bat Conservation. These professional bat researchers from Michigan have appeared on National Geographic, the Tonight Show, Martha Stewart and more. Learn about the benefits of bats, the need for conservation, and what can be done to help these unique mammals as we step into the mysterious world of bats. Explore their lives, habitats, and nocturnal strategies. Encounter a Big Brown bat from North America and hear its high-pitched echolocation with a “bat detector,” meet fruit bats from Africa and Asia, and come face-to-face with the largest bat in the world (Flying Fox Bat from Malaysia). This beautiful bat has a 6-foot wingspan! Sponsored by the Friends of Zion Nature Center. Donation of a canned food item for the food pantry is encouraged.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte

Fall has arrived!! Let the pumpkin recipes’ make their way to everyone’s dinner table!

Ingredients
For the pumpkin pie spice syrup: 
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar 
5 whole cloves 
3 allspice berries 
3 cardamom pods, cracked 
2 slices fresh ginger 
1 cinnamon stick 
½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract 
Pinch ground black pepper 
 
For pumpkin spice latte: 
1 cup whole milk, warmed 
1 ½ tablespoons of your pumpkin spice syrup 
2 ounces espresso or very strong coffee  Whipped cream and ground cinnamon, for serving (optional) 

For the pumpkin pie spice syrup:
1. Combine the brown sugar, cloves, allspice, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, and ¼ cup water in a small pot.  
2. Bring to a boil over high heat.
3. Remove from heat and stir until the sugar is dissolved; let cool.
4. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 2 months.

For the latte: 
1. Combine the milk and pumpkin spice syrup in a blender. Blend until frothy, 20 to 30 seconds.
2. Combine the frothed milk and coffee in a mug.
3. Top with whipped cream and ground cinnamon, if desired.

Join The Reserve in giving back to the community! Participate in our canned food drive with donations going to the Zionsville Food Pantry. They especially are in need of children’s cereal, canned chicken, Chunky soup, granola bars and Hamburger Helper – but anything is appreciated. Bring donations to the Clubhouse during office hours any day in November before Nov 21st.

You can save a lot of water by running full loads. You may be using more than the dishwasher itself of you pre-rinse your dishes. Try scraping them off completely with a spatula instead.
